Judge: No prison for Bosnian refugee who lied

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A crowd packed a federal courtroom in Portland Friday as they watched the father of a former Miss Oregon face prison time for charges that he lied to U.S. immigration 12 years ago to obtain refugee status for his family.

The Oregonian reports that 53-year-old Milenko Krstic did not disclose to U.S. immigration officials that he served in the Bosnian Serb army. Disclosing his service would have delayed or denied his refugee application.

Krstic said that he was required to join the army, or face prison. He says he lied to bring his family here.

U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown sentenced Krstic to one year of probation, the lowest sentence for a felony crime.

Krstic brought his wife and two daughters to the Portland area in 1998. Two years ago his daughter, Danijela, was crowned Miss Oregon, the first foreign-born contestant to win.
