PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Officials say a 22-year-old man who was in a shootout with U.S. marshals in Portland last week will face charges in Oregon before being returned to Washington, where he is wanted for investigation of attempted murder.

Adam S. Berndt was shot and critically injured after he opened fire Thursday afternoon outside a Northeast Portland apartment, and he remained in critical condition Sunday.

Portland Police Bureau Sgt. Pete Simpson says Berndt is expected to be charged in Oregon with attempted aggravated murder of a police officer, and it could be years before he’s returned to Washington.

The marshals were trying to arrest Berndt in connection with the shooting of a homeless man in nearby Clark County, Wash., last Wednesday.
