TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Junior Steven Threet will open the season as Arizona State’s starting quarterback.

Sun Devils coach Dennis Erickson announced the decision Monday, saying Threet was the most consistent of the three players battling for the position.

The transfer from Michigan beat out sophomore Brock Osweiler and junior Samson Szakacsy, who battled arm fatigue in practice last week, after a close battle that started in spring. Osweiler is still expected to play Saturday against Portland State, though Erickson didn’t say how much.

Threet started eight games at Michigan in 2008, throwing for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns before sitting out last season because of transfer rules.
