INDEPENDENCE, Calif. (AP) — Rescue crews are searching by ground and by air for a hiker from Oregon who is missing in the wilderness near California’s Mt. Whitney.

Inyo County sheriff’s spokeswoman Carma Roper says in a statement Tuesday that 37-year-old Christian Meining of Portland has not been seen since Friday morning.

A group of hikers told sheriff’s investigators Meining spent the night Thursday at Lower Boy Scout Lake, then told the group the next morning he was heading back down the trail but was not seen again.

Meining has brown hair and brown eyes and had a green-and-black jacket, a blue-and-black backpack and a yellow tent.

The department is asking that anyone in the Mt. Whitney area over Thanksgiving weekend contact them.
