Portland soldier faces court-martial at JBLM

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — A court-martial is being held Wednesday at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for one of the 5th Stryker brigade soldiers accused of crimes while deployed in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Robert G. Stevens, of Portland, Ore., is charged with conspiracy, assault, dereliction of duty and making a false statement.

If convicted he could face more than 27 years in prison.

A dozen soldiers have been charged in the Afghan probe. Stevens is the first to go to the court-martial.
