PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Documents released by U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer show that granting broad immunity from lawsuits for a military contractor in Iraq may end up being very costly for taxpayers.
The Oregon Democrat released the documents as The Oregonian newspaper said it independently obtained a February letter from managers for Kellogg, Brown and Root reporting damage claims could exceed $150 million.
Soldiers — including some from the Oregon National Guard — have sued the Texas-based contractor known by its initials, KBR.
A federal lawsuit filed in Portland claims KBR exposed Oregon soldiers to a toxic chemical while they were guarding a water treatment plant in Iraq.
