High Point holds off Gardner-Webb 66-64

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) — Nick Barbour scored 16 points and High Point held on for a 66-64 victory over Gardner-Webb despite missing three free throws in the final 34 seconds on Thursday night.

High Point (3-3) won its Big South Conference opener to improve to 3-0 at home.

The Panthers took a 66-64 lead on Tehran Cox’s free throw with 34 seconds left, but he missed the second and Shay Shine missed two free throws with 2 seconds to play. Gardner-Webb (5-4, 0-1) missed a 3-pointer with 6 seconds remaining and another at the buzzer.

Shine’s jumper gave High Point a 65-63 lead with 1:31 left, but Gardner-Webb’s Stefon Johnson missed an opportunity for the tie by missing the second of two free throw attempts with 41 seconds left.

Cox and Shine finished with 15 points each and Corey Law had 11 rebounds for High Point.

Johnson scored 20 and Jon Moore had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Gardner-Webb.
