PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — As Gov. Ted Kulongoski finishes his time in office, he holds in his hands the fate of over 60 convicted criminals.
They’ve applied for clemency in the hope the governor will forgive their crimes.
KATU-TV reports that one of those who had hoped for a pardon was Wendy Maldonado, a battered wife who confessed to a 9-1-1 dispatcher in 2005 that she killed her husband by hitting him over the head with a hammer.
But Kulongoski denied her request for clemency Thursday afternoon, even though her supporters said they will try again.
According to the governor’s office, Kulongoski only grants clemencies in what he considers extraordinary circumstances.
