SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco supervisors want updated financial projections before deciding on Mayor Gavin Newsom’s latest proposal to host the next America’s Cup.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Newsom is pushing a plan that would have the main public facilities for the race on the city’s northern waterfront. The original plan had them south of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

City officials say the new site would cost the city less and provide a better view of the race.

The Board of Supervisors Budget Committee on Wednesday said more work needs to be done to determine the site’s costs and benefits before the committee could vote on it.

San Francisco appears to be the front-runner to host the race in 2013 but faces competition from Italy.
