Army corps checking W Washington levees

SEATTLE (AP) — Army Corps of Engineer teams are checking levees in Western Washington for possible damage from the heavy rains and flooding earlier this week.

The corps says that during the worst of the flooding, it handed out thousands of sandbags, supplied pumps, helped strengthen levees and repaired a levee breech on the Humptulips River in Grays Harbor County.

It says area dams are back to normal operations. The reservoir behind Howard Hanson Dam on the Green River is empty. A wall next to the dam was heavily damaged nearly two years ago, threatening the Green River Valley downstream.

The National Weather Service says showers are expected into the middle of next week, but flooding is unlikely in Western Washington for at least the next 10 days.
