DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Matt Gatens scored a season-high 19 points and Iowa beat Drake 59-52 Saturday night for its first true road win of the season.

Freshmen Melsahn Basabe and Zach McCabe each added nine for the Hawkeyes (6-5), who scored the game’s first 14 points, blew that lead but rallied late for its third win in four games.

Rayvonte Rice’s 3-pointer brought Drake within 47-45 with 5:12 left. But McCabe hit a layup and Devyn Marble buried an off-balance, one-handed 15-footer that just beat the shot clock and gave Iowa a 53-47 lead with just over 3 minutes left.

Seth VanDeest then missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Iowa burned a minute off the clock before Marble’s free throws put them ahead 55-47 with 1:26 to go.

Rice and Ryan Wedel each had 14 points to lead Drake (4-5), which has lost 29 of its last 32 games against the rival Hawkeyes.
