EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Eugene has started sending some misdemeanor inmates to Springfield’s new jail.

The Register-Guard reports Eugene may rent up to 10 beds at a time for $75 a day per inmate.

Eugene Municipal Court Administrator Jeff Perry says the arrangement will reduce the number of inmates who are released early from the Lane County Jail because of understaffing.

Springfield’s jail opened in January and can hold up to 100 inmates.
