South Dakota defeats Eastern Washington 78-72

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Trevor Gruis scored 19 points to lead South Dakota past Eastern Washington 78-72 Monday night.

Three other Coyotes were in double figures. Charlie Westbrook and Jake Thomas each had 15 points and Steve Tecker scored 12 for South Dakota (5-7).

Glen Dean led Eastern Washington (3-8) with 16 points. Cliff Ederaine had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles.

Eastern Washington led 36-31 at the half and scored the first basket of the second half, but the Coyotes used a 12-5 run to go ahead 43-41. Westbrook’s 3-pointer with 10:05 to play put South Dakota ahead to stay at 54-51 and the lead got as high as 10 points.

Dean scored on a three-point play with 11 seconds left to get the Eagles within four, but Thomas hit two free throws to finish the scoring.
