SEATTLE (AP) — Two Washington women who fought for gays in the military attended the ceremony in Washington, D.C., where President Barack Obama repealed the ban on homosexuals serving openly.

Former Air Force flight nurse Maj. Margaret Witt of Spokane and retired nurse, Army Col. Grethe Cammermeyer of Whidbey Island were in the room Wednesday with hundreds of others sharing in the celebration.

Cammermeyer told KIRO Radio she was honored to be asked to lead the Pledge of Allegiance for the event.

Cammermeyer sued for reinstatement back in 1992 after being drummed out for being a lesbian. She and Witt won reinstatement after courts found their dismissals unconstitutional.
