Talking Points 12/22

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

The Washougal girls basketball team got a big-time plug by someone claiming to be one of the program’s coaches.

Calling into The Bald Faced Truth, a sports talk show hosted by John Canzano on 95.5 FM The Game in Portland, someone challenged Canzano to give girls basketball a chance.

(Apparently, Canzano is not a huge fan of women’s basketball and one of the topics of the day was UConn’s winning streak.)

The caller said Washougal plays a fun style of basketball, giving the players freedom to shoot a bunch of 3-pointers. And the Panthers are not afraid of contact. The caller said the players take a lot of charges.

Not sure if that will change Canzano’s mind, but it was fun to hear a plug for a Clark County team on the radio.

A lot of bowls are having a hard time selling tickets. Not the Las Vegas Bowl. Tonight’s game between Boise State and Utah is sold out.

Why?

Well, it’s Vegas, of course!

If you lived in Utah or Idaho and had a chance to go to Vegas, you would.

We just wish the Vegas Bowl would become the Pac-10’s No. 2 destination. The Rose Bowl (or BCS championship) would be No. 1, of course, but send the next best team to Vegas and find a quality conference opponent.

San Diego is nice, but the Holiday Bowl has kind of run its course. San Antonio and the Alamo Bowl is nothing worth remembering. And trust us, Vegas is a lot more fun than El Paso for the Sun Bowl. Heck, Reno is more fun than El Paso.
