Prep notebook: Two local lineman earn first-team all-state honors

A pair of local defensive linemen earned spots on the all-state first team for their classification as The Associated Press all-state high school football teams were released Tuesday.

Camas senior Odin Coe was the lone player from the Greater St. Helens League to be selected to the Class 3A all-state first team.

Coe led the Papermakers defense as they reached the state quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

Stevenson senior Wade Huett made the first team defense for Class 1A. Huett was the defensive player of the year in the Trico League, as the Bulldogs reached the state playoffs for the first time in school history.

Two Skyview athletes earned honorable mention in Class 4A. Cody Fields, a senior, earned honorable mention on the offensive line. Senior Ellis Henderson earned honorable mention in the all-purpose position, as well as defensive back.

Henderson, the 4A GSHL defensive player of the year, has given a verbal commitment to play for Hawai’i.

Coe, Henderson and Union linebacker Zak Browning were selected to the all-classification all-state teams as selected by the Seattle Times and the Tacoma News Tribune.

Skyline star wide receiver Kasen Williams was voted as The Associated Press Washington prep football player of the year.

Williams was named the player of the year in voting conducted by AP members. Along with being the player of the year in all classifications, Williams was voted the player of the year in Class 4A.

Already committed to play his college ball at Washington, Williams finished his career with 235 receptions, 4,121 yards and 56 receiving TDs.

Capital running back Tyler Sundberg was voted the player of the year in Class 3A, while Tumwater’s Kyle Warner earned the honor in Class 2A.

Connell’s Matt Hadley (Class 1A), South Bend’s Ryan Vongmixay (Class 2B) and Lummi’s Eric Robinson (Class 1B) were also voted players of the year in their respective classes.

NFF nominees announced

The Clark County chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will hold its annual scholarship banquet at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Hudson’s Bay High School.

This is the 19th year for the event, where six high school senior football players receive scholarship money for college ranging from $1,500 to $3,500.

Willamette University football coach Mark Speckman will be the keynote speaker.

Tickets for the event cost $30 and are available by calling Rich Biggs at 360-695-3301.

The nominees for the scholarships are: Odin Coe and Logan Grindy from Camas; Justin Jenks and Kevin Cotter from Columbia River; Jacob Maki and Chase Lawrence from Evergreen; Richard Vansiclen from Fort Vancouver; Colton Harper and Ingo Arrozal from Hudson’s Bay; Lucas Wiseman and Daniel Gillock from King’s Way Christian; Drew Bryant and Jeff Carmody from Mountain View; Dylan Axtel and Avi Stifer from Prairie; James Oman and Dylan Young from Ridgefield; Cody Fields and Tom Zink from Skyview; Zach Castro from Stevenson; Sam Lowe and Sam Ferenchak from Union; Ryan Erdwins from Washougal; Dylan Babinowitz and Connor Warner from White Salmon; and William Davis and Oliver Moss from Woodland.

High schools in Clark and Skamania counties could nominate one lineman and one back for scholarship consideration.

Nominees had to play high school football as seniors and carry a grade point average of at least 3.0.

Scholarship winners are chosen based on academic and football success, and their contributions to the community.

Mayolo chooses school

La Center senior Chris Mayolo has signed a letter of intent to continue his wrestling career at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Mayolo placed third at 145 pounds at the Class 1A state wrestling championship as a junior.

Clark County players shine for Jesuit

Two Clark County high school soccer players earned all-state honors in Oregon playing for Jesuit High School of Beaverton.

Jake Bishop of Vancouver was selected as the Oregon Class 6A state player of the year as leading the Crusaders to the Oregon 6A championship.

That team also included Matt Wise of Camas. Wise played with Bishop on a Washington state championship club team in 2006 before moving to Nebraska. His family returned to Camas prior to this school year, and he joined Bishop at Jesuit.
