Little League, youth ball signup information for 2011 season

Most leagues begin registration the first of the year

The Columbian
Published: December 28, 2010, 12:00am

January is the month that most area Little Leagues hold registration for the coming spring and summer season. Listed here are scheduled sign-up opportunities and website information as provided by area Little Leagues.

Little League is an all-volunteer program. In Washington, it is organized into 11 districts, two of which serve The Columbian’s readership area. Boundary maps for the leagues in those districts are available on the district websites (listed below).

A softball league for girls who live within the boundaries for Central Vancouver, Columbia and Fort Vancouver Little Leagues was formed in 2010. Girls can register for the combined softball league during those three league’s scheduled sign-up opportunities.

In addition to area Little League signups, information about signing up for Babe Ruth Baseball, the Vancouver Girls Softball Association, and JBO baseball is listed below.

Here is some basic Little League information:

• Most leagues offer baseball and softball. Baseball for players ages 5-18 are based on the player’s age on April 30, 2011. Softball for girls ages 5-18 are based on player’s age on Dec. 31, 2010.

• Practices begin in March and the Little League season runs through mid-June, followed by all-star competition.

• Little League is run by volunteers. Most leagues still need volunteers for a variety of positions for 2010.

• Online registration is available for many leagues. Most leagues allow only returning players to register online. Check league websites for details.

• Proof of current residency is needed to register. Most leagues require three documents from this list to prove residency:

Driver’s license; voter’s registration; school records; welfare or child care records; federal records, state records; city records; support payment records; homeowner or tenant records; utility bills (i.e., gas, electric, water/ sewer, phone, mobile phone, heating, waste disposal); financial (loan, credit, investments, etc.) records; insurance documents; medical records; military records; Internet, cable or satellite records; vehicle records; employment records. Note that three utility bills count as only one document.

• The child’s original state-issued certificate of live birth is required to register for Little League.

• Prices vary. Most leagues offer financial help for families who need it, and offer discounts for families with more than one child in the league. In some leagues, fees are lower for those who register early.

• Tryout dates and late registration opportunities are usually announced in January.

• Challenger Division. Battle Ground/Highlands, Columbia, and Lacamas are leagues that offer a Challenger Division for disabled players ages 20 and younger who live in Southwest Washington.
