VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Patrol says a 56-year-old Vancouver man lost consciousness while driving on Interstate 5 and his car was struck by another vehicle.

The Columbian reported that James R. Spady was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday night at Southwest Washington Medical Center.

The State Patrol says Spady suffered internal injuries in the Thursday afternoon crash. An 88-year-old female passenger in his car fractured a rib.

Troopers say Spady was driving on the freeway near Hazel Dell when he lost consciousness due to a medical condition, his car coming nearly to a stop. He was hit from the rear by a van; that driver was not injured.

The State Patrol says the crash was caused by Spady’s medical problem and troopers don’t plan to ticket him.
