PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The consultants selected to review the death of a man in custody of Portland police will charge the city more than $68,000.
The Oregonian reports the city is still negotiating a contract with the consultants, the OIR Group.
The review is expected to examine the investigation and policies related to the 2006 death of a 42-year-old mentally ill man, James Chasse. He suffered 16 broken ribs and a punctured lung during his arrest.
City Auditor LaVonne Griffin-Valade has asked that the consultants determine why the Portland internal inquiry into Chasse’s death spanned nearly three years and whether police policies or training are adequate.
