Law enforcement officials in Yakima have arrested a man suspected of shooting an employee Dec. 30 at the Bi-Lo Market in Hazel Dell.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office reported Jose “Nica” Gasteazoro-Paniagua, 32, of Vancouver was taken into custody Wednesday. He was picked up on an outstanding warrant.

Gasteazoro-Paniagua is accused of attempted murder for allegedly shooting Jose Guadalupe Muro, 29, of Vancouver several times with a .45-caliber handgun. The two men knew each other, according to the sheriff’s office.

Muro is an employee at Bi-Lo, 8725 N.E. Highway 99, but robbery is not thought to be a motive in the shooting, investigators have said.

Sgt. Chad Rothenberger said the US Marshals Service and a career criminal apprehension team tracked Gasteazoro-Paniagua to Yakima. He was taken into custody without incident.

Detectives from the sheriff’s office’s Major Crimes Unit have gone to Yakima and are attempting to interview Gasteazoro-Paniagua.

He is expected to be returned to Clark County Wednesday. He’ll make a first appearance in Clark County Superior Court Thursday at 9 a.m.
