EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A Lane County judge has refused to trim sentences for a woman who was convicted of arranging to have two young gang members kill a teenager who planned to testify against her son.

The sentence reductions would have applied to nonviolent crimes that Mary Louise Thompson was convicted of in 1996, burglary and hindering prosecution. She is also serving a 25-year sentence for aggravated murder.

To cut the prison budget, the Legislature has increased the amount of “good time” inmates can earn for some nonviolent crimes.

The Department of Corrections said the effect in Thompson’s case would be to release her about 10 months early — in mid-2020.

But Judge Debra Vogt ruled Friday that Thompson isn’t eligible for a reduction.
