APPOMATTOX, Va. (AP) — Police say a gunman suspected of killing eight people in Virginia was wearing a bulletproof vest when he surrendered after spending the night hiding in dense woods.

They say there may still be explosive devices in or around the house where some of the bodies were found and they’re sending bomb technicians.

Appomattox Sheriff O. Wilson Staples says 39-year-old Christopher Speight (Spite) had no weapons on him when he approached officers at the scene of the shootings about 7:10 a.m. Wednesday and turned himself in.

He was wearing a black sweat shirt and camouflage pants when authorities put him in a sheriff’s car at state police headquarters later.

Staples says authorities still don’t know the motive for the shootings or how the victims and shooter were related.
