CANYONVILLE, Ore. (AP) — Almost 1,000 ballots for next week’s tax vote mysteriously vanished.

The News-Review newspaper of Roseburg reports that 485 of the missing ballots were intended for Camas Valley residents. The other 487 ballots were issued to Canyonville residents with last names beginning with the letters A through L.

The ballots were packaged on a pallet delivered to the Roseburg post office on Jan. 7. and then sent to the regional postal sorting center in Springfield.

Most of the 62,071 ballots included in the shipment were promptly delivered. The Camas Valley and Canyonville ballots disappeared.

On Friday, the wayward ballots were canceled and new ones reprinted. County Clerk Barbara Nielsen says residents in Camas Valley and Canyonville should have received the new ballots in Tuesday’s mail.
