SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a man died when he accidentally fell 30 feet from the side of a freeway in San Jose after jumping out of the way of an oncoming car during a rainstorm.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man who died Tuesday as 32-year-old Abundio Prudente of Madera.

San Jose fire Capt. Scott Kouns says Prudente was in a car that spun out on rain-slicked U.S. 101 in the Coyote Valley area.

He and another person left the car then saw an out-of-control vehicle coming toward them. The two jumped out of the way, and Prudente accidentally fell over the side of the freeway.

He later died at a hospital.
