PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — Another 12 fishers have been released in Olympic National Park as part of a three-year effort to reintroduce the weasel-like animal to Washington state.
Fishers are native to Washington, but vanished from the state decades ago because of overtrapping and habitat loss. Including the 12 released this week, 77 of the animals have been released in the park since 2008. Each animal is fitted with a small radio transmitter to let biologists track and monitor its movements.
