Prep basketball: Prairie boys outshoot Columbia River

Adam Herman and TJ Williams had big games, and the Prairie boys basketball team dominated the middle two quarters on Monday to sink visiting Columbia River.

The 72-61 win was the third in a row for the Falcons in the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League.

Herman scored 26 points, while Williams added 25. Williams hit six of seven free throws in the fourth quarter to help finish the win for Prairie (7-8, 3-2 3A GSHL).

Columbia River (7-8), which fell to 0-5 in league play, led 22-20 at the end of the first quarter. But Prairie outscored River 40-21 over the middle two periods.

Keaton Jackson had 12 rebounds, helping the Falcons control the boards by a 31-14 margin.

Kramer Ramberg and Isaiah Smith each scored 15 points for the Chieftains.

Hudson’s Bay 69, Fort Vancouver 62 — Derrick Brooks scored 15 points in the first half, sparking the host Eagles. Hudson’s Bay led 40-23 at halftime, and survived a second-half surge from the Trappers.

Brooks finished with 23 points, and Tra Ponder chipped in 15 for Hudson’s Bay (11-4, 3-2).

Keith Kirkland scored 16 for Fort Vancouver (8-7, 1-4), which pulled within four points in the second half. Mario Avalos-Eyler had 15 points and Jordan Miller 11.

Hockinson 63, R.A. Long 43 — A balanced offense and strong start carried the host Hawks to the 2A Greater St. Helens League victory.

Hockinson (9-5) had three players score in double figures, none of them top scorer Joshua Hall, as the Hawks improved to 3-1 in league play. Cole Larson scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Lucas Schwanz had 11 points and five assists, and Mitch Tugaw scored 12 points.

Hockinson led 32-14 at halftime.

Ian Mahncke scored 13 for R.A. Long (6-8, 2-2).

Ridgefield 61, Woodland 47 — The visiting Spudders scored the first 16 points, then had to pull away late for the win.

Michael Schwinof scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half for Ridgefield (7-6, 1-3), after Scott Backstrom scored 17 of his 22 in the first half.

Schwinof was 12 for 17 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds. Backstrom was 9 for 15 shooting and had nine rebounds and six assists.

The Beavers pulled within three points with less than six minutes to go, but after a Ridgefield timeout the Spudders regained momentum.

Trevor Hurn scored 16 points and Shane Brady 14 for Woodland (6-8, 0-4).

Mark Morris 69, Washougal 32 — The Monarchs wasted little time in building a big lead to remain undefeated in 2A GSHL play. Sean Atkins led all scorers with 19 points.

Washougal (7-5, 2-2) was led in scoring by Jeff Corona’s 11 points.x

Girls basketball

Skyview 63, Heritage 47 — Brooke Bowen scored a game-high 21 points, and Delaney Keser added 12 as Skyview (11-4, 5-0) remained unbeaten in 4A GSHL play with the win over visiting Heritage.

Clara Russell scored 14 points for Heritage (10-4, 3-2).

Kelso 59, Battle Ground 52 — The Tigers rallied from 13 points down at halftime, but couldn’t come all the way back.

Haley Grossman had 12 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, four blocks, and two assists for Battle Ground (7-8, 1-4).

Visiting Kelso made 22 of 33 free throws, including 14 free throws in the second quarter.
