BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — One man is missing and presumed drowned and one has been rescued after a canoe overturned on Lake Padden in Bellingham.

Off-duty Bellingham Firefighter Beau Whitehead and a police officer headed out on paddle boards after the canoe flipped Friday afternoon. Whitehead rescued one man and handed him off to the officer, who took him to shore. Whitehead then headed back to the other canoeist but by then the man had disappeared under the water.

The rescued man was taken to St. Joseph Hospital. Neither canoeist was immediately identified.

Whitehead says he flipped the canoe over and found two life jackets. The lake temperature is reportedly about 40 degrees.
