Commissioners with Clark Public Utilities ratified a new working agreement this week with the union representing about 100 linemen and other utility workers.

The new three-year agreement, which will take effect after the current contract expires Feb. 28, will increase wages by 2 percent this year, 3 percent in 2011 and 4 percent in 2012. There were no other changes to the terms.

As of March 1, the base journeyman lineman wage will be $37.26 per hour.

Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 125 ratified the agreement last week.

Commission president Nancy Barnes praised the union for accepting a 2 percent wage hike in the first year.

“This agreement reflects the current economic conditions in Clark County and the tight utility budgets we face this year,” she said in a prepared statement. “This contract will keep the wages paid to these employees competitive with wages paid by other regional utilities.”

It was the second relatively smooth contract negotiation since 2004, when a stalemate between management and union negotiators came to the brink of the first strike in the utility’s history.

The utility employs 360 people.
