GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Phoenix Coyotes have signed 38-year-old left wing Ray Whitney to a two-year contract.

Whitney has played 18 NHL seasons, the last five with the Carolina Hurricanes. He had 21 goals and 37 assists last season.

Whitney is a two-time NHL All-Star who was part of the Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup championship team in 2006.

Earlier Thursday, the Coyotes re-signed defenseman Derek Morris to a four-year contract but lost standout defenseman Zbynek Michalek (Zah-bee-nik Mik-haul-lek) to a lucrative deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
