Winter recreation advisers sought

OLYMPIA — Nominations will be accepted until July 31 for spots on Washington’s winter recreation and snowmobile advisory committees.

The winter recreation committee needs a non-motorized winter sports candidate from Southwest Washington plus an at-large candidate to represent snowmobilers.

The snowmobile committee needs a candidate from Southwest Washington and south-central Washington, which includes Klickitat County. The snowmobile committee also needs an at-large member to represent non-motorized interests.

Women outdoors workshop slated

CARNATION — A workshop to teach women outdoor skills is scheduled Sept. 17-19 at Camp River Ranch.

Twenty classes will be offered on skills such as archery, fishing, fly-fishing, kayaking, wild-game cooking, big-game hunting, map and compass use, wilderness survival, first aid, hunting dogs, and outdoor photography.

The fee is $235 and covers lodging, meals and equipment. A limited amount of financial assistance is available from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for first-time participants.

Road No. 99 open to Windy Ridge

Road No. 99 leading to the Windy Ridge viewpoint on the east side of Mount St. Helens has opened for the summer.

Crews have removed obstructions and completed repairs, the Forest Service reports.

Visitors will want to be cautious of equipment and crews still working in some locations.
