NIIGATA, Japan (AP) — U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir is skipping the 2010-11 season.

A three-time U.S. champion and two-time Olympian, Weir says he spent months “weighing the pros and cons of competing this season” before making the decision Thursday.

Weir plans to “reinvent myself as an athlete and artist.”

The national champion in 2004 through 2006, Weir was fifth at the Turin Olympics in 2006 and sixth in this year’s Vancouver Games.

Known for his outlandish costumes and frank comments, Weir trains in New Jersey with coach Galina Zmievskaya and also works with 1992 Olympic champion Victor Petrenko.
