A Vancouver motorist who apparently fell asleep while exiting state Highway 500 in front of the Washington State Patrol’s regional headquarters was cited early Thursday for second-degree negligent driving.

Eric Ceglowski, 38, drove onto a traffic island at about 3 a.m. as he attempted to exit the highway at Northeast 112th Avenue, according to the State Patrol. His SUV then struck a telephone pole.

Ceglowski was transported to Southwest Washington Medical Center to be evaluated for a chest injury. His 2003 Ford Expedition was totaled.
