MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo played long toss on Friday for the first time since straining his oblique muscle, although there is no timetable for his return.

Gallardo, who was selected to the All-Star game, hurt himself while pitching in St. Louis on Sunday. He is 8-4 with a 2.58 ERA in 18 starts for Milwaukee.

“Yo played catch from 90 feet for 10 minutes and said he felt pretty good afterwards,” Brewers manager Ken Macha said before a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

San Diego Padres reliever Heath Bell replaced Gallardo on the NL All-Star team.

Meanwhile, Macha said right-handed reliever LaTroy Hawkins will pitch a simulated game on Saturday at Miller Park. He’s been on the 60-day DL since May 7 with right shoulder weakness.
