Ziegler sets meet record in 800 free in LA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Olympian Kate Ziegler has set a meet record in the preliminaries of the 800-meter freestyle at the Los Angeles Grand Prix.

Ziegler swam the distance in 8 minutes, 31.05 seconds, making her the fastest qualifier for Friday night’s final on the campus of Southern California.

Fellow Olympian Chloe Sutton was second-quickest in 8:41.11. Ziegler broke Sutton’s old meet record of 8:31.29 set in May 2009.

Olympian Ous Mellouli of Tunisia led the qualifying for the men’s 1,500 free in 15:11.21, followed by Chad La Tourette in 15:11.22. The final will be Saturday.
