JEFFERSON, Ore. (AP) — A four-alarm fire early Sunday has destroyed a barn in Jefferson, Oregon, killing a calf and severely burning a horse.

The Jefferson Fire District says it and six other agencies near the town between Salem and Albany responded at 3:35 a.m. to the blaze at Talbot View Stables. A caretaker who was awakened by his barking dog was able to release seven horses, but the calf died and a 7-year-old stallion was badly burned.

Fire crews were pulled out after part of the barn collapsed, but were able to save nearby structures. The blaze was extinguished after about two hours and its cause is under investigation.
