US women’s eight beats Canada at Rotsee

LUCERNE, Switzerland (AP) — The U.S. women’s eight has edged Canada in a World Cup regatta, perfectly timing a final sprint to win by two-tenths of a second.

The 2008 Olympic champions with coxswain Katlin Snyder finished the classic course on Lake Rotsee near Lucerne, Switzerland, in 6 minutes, 12.19 seconds Sunday.

Canada dominated for most of the race, finishing in 6:12.39, ahead of Britain in 6:17.35.

Britain took four World Cup golds against three for New Zealand. France, Croatia, Belarus, Australia, the United States, Germany and the Czech Republic took one gold each.

The 2010 World Rowing Championships will be held at Lake Karapiro in New Zealand Oct. 31-Nov. 7.
