JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The president of South Africa’s Olympic committee says the country will consider a bid for the 2020 or 2024 Games.

A day after the World Cup final, Gideon Sam said Monday the committee will consult with the government on the possibility of trying to host the first Olympics in Africa.

Sam said it was up to the government, the Olympic committee and the sporting community whether to submit a bid.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has said a bid from South Africa would be welcomed. He said the country’s hosting of Africa’s first soccer World Cup was an “outstanding success.”
