Firefighting progress at wildfire near Wenatchee

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — Firefighters are making progress against a wildfire that has burned nearly 19 square miles of grass and brush about 10 miles north of Wenatchee.

A spokeswoman, Karen Ripley with the Interagency Incident Management Team, says calmer winds Tuesday should help. Gusty winds Monday prevent helicopters from flying, but she says the spread of flames was not as great as feared.

More than 400 firefighters are at the scene of the Swakane Canyon Fire that was reported Saturday in canyons west of the Columbia River.

The fire has destroyed a hay barn and threatens about 70 homes along Highway 97A.

About 18 people who evacuated Saturday night have returned to their homes.
