Bolton beats Charlotte 3-0 to start preseason tour

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Martin Petrov made an immediate impact in his Bolton debut by scoring a goal and setting up another in the Wanderers’ 3-0 preseason victory over the Charlotte Eagles on Wednesday night.

Gary Cahill and Johan Elmander also scored in the beginning of a three-game North American tour for the English Premier League team.

Petrov, the former Manchester City midfielder, sent a short corner kick to the near post which Cahill headed into the net in the eighth minute.

Petrov made it 3-0 with his blast to the upper left corner from 25 yards out in the 80th minute.

Elmander scored in the 50th minute, while Jussi Jaaskelainen and Adam Bogdan combined on the shutout. World Cup players Stuart Holden, Danny Shittu and Chung-Yong Lee didn’t make the trip.
