JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Organizers say they have sold more than 44,000 tickets in two days for South Africa’s historic Tri-Nations rugby match against New Zealand at Soweto’s Soccer City stadium.
The Springboks will play for the first time in the township on Aug. 21 when they face old rival the All Blacks at the stadium that hosted Sunday’s World Cup final.
Johannesburg’s Golden Lions union, which will host the match, said Wednesday all tickets released in the first phase were sold out. It said 5,000 more tickets — reduced to $13 each — would go on sale on July 26 only in Soweto.
Thirty-eight thousand tickets are reserved for season ticket holders.
Eighty-eight thousand people are expected at the game — the biggest rugby crowd in South Africa in 55 years.
