INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Spurrier caught stablemate Never in the final strides to win Thursday’s $54,908 feature by a head and give Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a 1-2 finish at Hollywood Park.
It was the second time in the last three racing days that Baffert had a 1-2 finish. Last Saturday, E Z’s Gentleman and Sangaree took the top two spots in the $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap.
Ridden by Joel Rosario, Spurrier ran 1 1-6 miles on the artificial surface in 1:42.99 and paid $6.40, $2.80 and $2.10.
Never returned $4.20 and $2.20. One Track Mind was another 214 lengths back in third and paid $2.10 to show.
Spurrier has five wins in 23 career starts and earnings of $252,447. Rosario rode four winners on Thursday.
