SULTAN, Wash. (AP) — The Snohomish County sheriff’s office says a young rafter has been killed on the Skykomish River near Sultan, Wash. The victim is believed to be in his late teens.

Officers say the young man was floating down the river Friday afternoon with eight friends on several rafts when one raft hit some debris and he was knocked into the water. Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Rochon says the young man’s friends tried to grab him but strong currents pinned him against a log underwater.

Rochon says the victim was not wearing a life vest. And he says the group was using “air mattress-type” devices more suitable for a swimming pool than a swift-flowing river.
