OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) — West Ocean took the lead in the stretch and drew off to win the $100,000 Klassy Briefcase Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday, beating Candy Cane by 234 lengths.
Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Garrett Gomez, the 4-year-old filly covered the 512 furlongs on a firm turf course in 1:01 3/5 and returned $3, $2.10 and $2.10. It was the sixth win in nine career starts for West Ocean, who boosted her career earnings to $274,640.
In the co-feature, Patriotic Viva went wire-to-wire to win the $100,000 Serena’s Song Stakes, beating C C’s Pal by 334 lengths.
Ridden by Joe Bravo and trained by Patrick Biancone, the 3-year-old filly covered the mile and 70 yards over the fast track in 1:41 4/5 and paid $4.80, $2.60 and $2.40.
