ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former Ashland lawyer has been sentenced to three years in prison in Rhode Island for embezzling money from clients.

William Craven pleaded no contest in January to a single count of felony embezzlement and three misdemeanor counts after he was charged with embezzling $400,000 from the estate of Maurice Longo.

Longo was a house painter who died in 1992 after scrimping and saving to create a better life for his heirs, according to Bruce Algier, his former son-in-law.

In 2006, Craven put his farmland near Ashland up for auction. He’d owned the property since 1994 and once tried to create a vineyard there.

The 67-year-old Craven was sentenced Monday in Rhode Island Superior Court. He was also ordered to serve two years of home confinement and 10 years on probation.
