MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — Two weeks and 20 miles after Buddy the cockatiel took flight from his owner’s Moses Lake, Wash., backyard, the bird is back at Dave Cerul’s home.

Cerul says he’d taken Buddy outdoors with his cage open before so didn’t think much of it when a friend asked if she could remove the bird from his cage and walk outside. But this time Buddy flew straight up and headed north.

Actually, it only took about three days before Buddy landed on the head of a man refueling a vehicle in a wheat field. After several hand-offs, Buddy ended up with former bird owners Terry and Alice Listello of Ephrata. Alice says they placed a “found bird” ad because Buddy was so friendly “we thought there was a chance someone was missing a real nice bird.”

When her phone rang, it was Buddy’s owner.
