SEATTLE (AP) — Every day is a struggle for Joseph Newlove as he waits for news about his son, Petty Officer 3rd Class Jerod Newlove.

His 25-year-old son is one of two sailors who went missing in Afghanistan last week. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for killing the other missing sailor, who has been confirmed dead by American military officials.

Joseph Newlove told KOMO-TV he understands his son chose to fight for his country, but knowing that hasn’t been much comfort in the last few days. He just wants his son to come home safe.

Newlove is originally from Renton, but has also lived in West Seattle. Navy officials have asked the media not to elaborate on his personal life.
