PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Detectives from the Portland police cold case unit have arrested a 56-year-old man for investigation of murder in a 1984 homicide.

Detective Mary Wheat said Frederick Alvin Richey was arrested Thursday in suburban Gresham in the death of Frances Marie Waites.

The 28-year-old Waites was found dead in her residence on March 23, 1984.

The state medical examiner at the time said Waites was stabbed at least 10 times. Her death was discovered by a fellow worker, who was picking her up on the way to their job.

Police say the Oregon State Police Crime Lab was able to provide a lead on DNA evidence.

Richey is scheduled for a court appearance Friday.
