Heavy rain and strong winds could turn roadways into streams, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued early this morning by the National Weather Service in Portland.

The steadily pouring water could sweep road debris in front of drains, allowing untethered creeks to grow.

The weather warning was issued hours into a strong Pacific storm expected to last through the day.

Wind is expected to blow steadily between 10 and 16 mph, with some gusts registering as high as 24 mph.

Today’s high is forecasted at 63 degrees.

“This is typically more like what we’d see in November or December,” said Tyree Wilde, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Portland. “It’s a very unusual storm system for June. There’s a very strong jet stream with it. Also, it has tapped some tropical moisture. When it gets in here, it’s going to wring out some precipitation.”

After the today’s storm peters out, he said, another one will arrive on Friday.
