After a rocky spring, the Vancouver Symphony has received a much-needed financial boost. The orchestra was awarded a $15,326 grant from The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington.
“This wonderful gift will provide timely upgrades to our music and office equipment for the coming year and beyond,” Vancouver Symphony Board Chairwoman Betty Sue Morris said in a news release. “We are grateful for the grant to the symphony and we feel it is also for our community. It is vital to the organization to continue to provide our community with a very high quality and exciting symphony concert annual series.”
The symphony, a 75-member professional orchestra, has struggled financially this year, with corporate and private donations down. The organization had to cancel its April concerts due to a budgetary shortfall.
The symphony launched a Save the Music campaign seeking to raise $20,000 by April 30, a goal which was surpassed. The symphony concluded its 2009-2010 season with concerts on May 29 and 30. The first concerts of the 2010-2011 season will be on Oct. 2 and 3.
