WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson is doing double duty this weekend.
The four-time Sprint Cup champion is competing Saturday at Watkins Glen International in a six-hour Grand-Am Rolex Series race and then headed to Pocono Raceway for a Cup race on Sunday.
Johnson flew into Watkins Glen early Friday and practiced in a Daytona Prototype for about 15 minutes before returning to Pocono for afternoon Cup practice. He’ll be co-driving the No. 99 with Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney for Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing.
Johnson has raced 11 times at Watkins Glen International — eight in Cup and three in Nationwide — but never traversed the famed “boot” section of the 3.4-mile circuit used by the IndyCar Series, but not included in the NASCAR layout. That was part of the appeal of making the commitment to race at The Glen.
